The History of Communism told for the Mentally Ill archiveWe re in the Moscow Central Mental Asylum. It s 1953 and a few weeks before the death of Stalin. Matei Visniec s hilarious new play sees the Soviet Writer s Union send young writer Yuri Petrovsky into the asylum to explain the history of communism to the patients. Obviously it has to be simplified. It is this simplification that gives the play its hilarity. The antics of the inmates trying to understand the sense of his story give rise to highly comical incidents where slapstick comedy, French farce and subtle text are mixed in colourful Moldovan style. The irony of the play resides in the predicament of the poor Yuri Petrovsky and the fact that the hospital staff is totally mad. Moldova’s most dynamic young theatre makes its UK debut in its co-production with L’Alliance Francaise de Moldova. UK Premiere in English/Romanian. Of History of Communism Told for the Mentally Ill:
