The Happiest Days of Your Life archiveIt is summer 1945. Staff and pupils of the Hilary Hall School for boys return to their Hampshire home after fifteen terms of evacuation. Godfrey Pond, the headmaster, receives a telegram from the Ministry of Devacuation informing him that another school will be billeted onto them. Enter the staff and pupils of the St Swithins School for Girls led by the formidable Miss Evelyn Whitechurch MA Oxon. The second world War may be over but the battle of the sexes is about to begin. An Ealing Studio classic - one of the funniest farces written for the British stage. The Happiest Days of Your Life was first performed in 1948 at the Apollo theatre in the West End. In 1950 John Dighton and Frank Lauder co-wrote the film adaptation which starred Alistair Sim as Pond, Margaret Rutherford as Whitchurch and stealing the limelight, Joyce Grenfell as the sports mistress Miss Gossage.
