A ruthless businessman is making a hurried journey to discover oil, anxious that his rivals will overtake him. Travelling with his guide and porter, he starts to doubt their loyalty. Are his suspicions justified or are they the exception that proves the rule?
The Exception and the Rule, written in 1930, is one of Brecht's series of lehrstrucke (teaching plays), an early example of his famous 'epic theatre'. A provocative parable, it asks what happens to humanity when exploitation become an accepted rule of life.
