When Ato returns to Ghana from his studies in the US, he brings with him a sophisticated black American wife. But their hopes of a happy marriage and of combining the sweetest and loveliest things in Africa and America are soon confounded by both African and Western responses to the shared inheritance of the slave trade. Ama Ata Aidoo’s seminal play examines the legacy of the slave trade and commemorates 50 years since Ghana's Independence and 200 years since the Abolition of the Slave Trade.
