The story of Anna an illiterate maidservant to Edith, childless wife of Arthur Harnham who runs a brewery in Salisbury. Edith is bored with her stilted marriage, and increasingly lives through Anna, whom she has known since childhood and has befriended despite their class difference. When Anna goes to a travelling fair and meets a handsome lawyer from London, Charles she becomes infatuated. And when Charles writes to her, Anna persuades her mistress to write romantic letters on her behalf. The love affair blossoms, but with whom has the lawyer fallen in love? Based on Thomas Hardy's short story On the Western Circuit.
