This play is based on the true story of the first group of actors and actresses to come form the African slaves who were freed in Manhattan in the 1820's. It follows this African Company's struggle to perform amongst the population's racial prejudices. 40 years before the end of slavery the first African American theatre troupe in the US stages Richard III, culminating in riots on the streets of New York.
