A tangled emotional mess ensues when Sally and Harriet, a lesbian couple in San Francisco each have a child using sperm from their partner's brother, while one of the brothers uses an egg from his sister's partner to help his wife get pregnant. For Sally and Harriet, everything comes down to biology, and they believe they can simply invent a family by using the necessary biological ingredients. But becoming a biological mother proves to be a more emotionally involving process than they expect. Ultimately Harriet realises she needs to have a meaningful relationship with the child which came from her embryo - despite the social complications this may cause.
