Stanley archiveWinner of 1997 BBC Award for Best Play. Premiered at the Royal National Theatre in 1996, Stanley is a brilliant and painfully truthful re-creation of the man and his milieu. Described as the wayward genius of modern British painting, Spencer's vision is unique. Inspired by the Bible and his native Cobham, his paintings create extraordinary poetic moods, and his sense of the sacred is fuelled by pagan lusts and longings. Driven by general desires that he felt to be holy, Spencer was torn between his love for his first wife Hilda and his passion for Patricia Preece.
