Six Black Candles archiveWhere's Stacie Gracie's head? In the fridge is the answer to that. Set in Coatbridge in the present day, Des Dillon's play scratches the surface of that town's Irish roots and Catholic heritage and uncovers a lively cauldron of superstition. Six sisters come together in the council flat bought by the oldest, Caroline, to help her out of a tight spot. In danger of losing the pad, she has hired a heavy to recover ten grand from her feckless husband. When that doesn't work, the solution is, clearly, to invoke the spell of the Six Black Candles. Pitting witchcraft against the Church might seem like iconoclasm, but the real themes of Six Black Candles are the simple power of storytelling and the strength in togetherness for families and communities.
