Four friends form a band and meet for practice in a freezing, damp, disused air raid shelter deep beneath an abandoned factory. They can't play, they can't sing and they don't know any songs. Still, everyone has to start somewhere.
Purple is a terse, claustrophobic play focusing on the drummer and the guitarist over the course of the evening's rehearsal as they tacitly test each other, silently struggle for power within the band and try to decide whether it, and even each other, are worth committing to.
Purple is part of Shell Connections, a nationwide celebration of youth theatre administered by the Royal National Theatre. Ten brand new plays by internationally renowned playwrights are commissioned and then chosen by groups across the UK to perform locally, then at Regional Showcases, with the best example of each play being invited to the National Showcase in London.
