December 1918. Elizabeth Wells is preparing a concert to celebrate women's suffrage and the end of the Great War. With songs and stories, she traces her family's rise from harbour to High Street, the tragic crisis of Emsworth's oyster industry and, finally, her own struggle to free herself from a cold, ambitious husband.
