Playland archiveAn acclaimed South African drama, set in a travelling amusement park on the outskirts of a small town in author Athol Fugard s beloved Karoo. A powerful allegory, it centres on events over New Year s Eve 1989, as two men -Gideon, a young white returnee from the border and Martinus, a black night watchman - meet accidentally. As the eighties become the nineties, they work through their differences and the shared nightmare of recent history towards reconciliation and the hope of peace. All proceeds from this production will be going to charities assisting HIV+ mothers and babies in South Africa. This production is the third Fugard play to open in London this year. Deeply passionate about South Africa and especially its politics, Athol Fugard was an outspoken critic of the apartheid regime and since then on other matters concerning the struggles of his country. His internationally acclaimed plays are hard hitting and give a vivid insight to the peoples of South Africa.
