Details
Based on real events in a large American prison in the 1930's - where the food is disgusting, the mood rebellious and the punishment amounts to torture - it is an impassioned account of inhumanity and injustice. One of the prisoners, Jim, trying not to spoil his chances of parole, distances himself from the unrest and spends his time reading poetry and becoming involved with Eva, the Warden's secretary. When the inmates start a hunger strike, the ruthless Warden puts Butch and the other ring-leader into 'Klondike' - an airless boiler room, from which few reappear. Those who do are looking for revenge.
