North of the Sunset - Thelonious Monk and the Jazz Baroness archiveBorn into poverty in rural America and brought up in a cramped New York apartment, Thelonious Monk was a unique creative mind now regarded as one of the world's most influential jazz musicians - but he was beset by fluctuating mental and physical health, and fought an intolerant America that would take little notice of him until it was almost too late. Brought up in luxury in the English countryside, a member of the Rothschild banking dynasty by birth and a baroness by marriage, Pannonica "Nica" de Koenigswarter was an aristocrat of significant privilege. Yet after a gig in Paris in 1952, the two established a connection that was as unlikely as it was absolute. North of the Sunset charts an impossible relationship in a volatile age, and celebrates the life and music of one of the all-time jazz legends. A first glimpse of this moving new play about Thelonious Monk, in a one-off staged reading.
