Written in 1888 by August Strindberg, Miss Julie is set on Midsummer's Eve on the estate of a Count in Sweden. Miss Julie finds herself drawn to a named Jean, who is particularly well-travelled, well-mannered and well-read but he is engaged to the cook, Christine. Miss Julie and Jean's relationship escalates rapidly to feelings of love and is subsequently consummated. Over the course of the play Miss Julie and Jean battle until Jean convinces her that the only way to escape her predicament is to commit suicide. South African born internationally acclaimed director, Yael Farber, sets her explosive new adaptation of Strindberg's Miss Julie in the remote, bleak beauty of Eastern Cape Karoo.
