Misery archiveBest selling romantic novelist Paul Sheldon has delighted readers for the past ten years with his cheap historical romances featuring the heroine Misery Chastain. Every year he retires to the snow covered hills of Colorado to cocoon himself in a remote hotel to write another novel. This year he crashes in a blinding blizzard en route and wakes up not in hospital but in the home of Annie Wilkes a reclusive nurse who has rescued him from his wrecked car. He was a writer. She was his number one fan. Part mystery and part thriller, Misery is also an engaging commentary on the pitfalls and dangers of fame and idolatry. Annie finds a much needed escape from her life and the dark secrets of her past in the fanciful tales of Misery Chastain. Paul Sheldon feels trapped by the romantic novels with which he made his name and feels that the time is right for him to move on and write his first 'serious novel. Unfortunately for him, Annie soon discovers that his latest novel does not feature Misery and she forces him to destroy the manuscript and to begin work on a new one immediately. Tender loving care soon turns to terrorism and a deadly cat and mouse game ensues as Paul finds himself forced to write a chapter of a new novel every day - simply to stay alive.
