Measuring Wings - Painting: The Last of England (Ford Madox Brown) archive150 years ago economic migrants set off on a journey to the other side of the world. Desperate, they crammed into tiny boats, braving 100 days without sight of land; afloat on hope, travelling into the unknown. Ford Madox Brown's painting The Last of England was the inspiration for this play of dislocation and uncertainty. Here the migrants are alone under a vast open sky; what they have been is gone and what they are to become is unknown. Birds fly. We wait for the winds to sweep us down, under the globe's curve so that we touch the ice and rise, chastened, to a new world.
