Mayhem - A tale of love, greed and horseracing archive1913/14: The Musselburgh Connection - the truth that links suffragettes, the passion of the racetrack and fish to an intricate network of events culminating in the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and the outbreak of the Great War. Was Springer McSween from Drem really responsible? Who were the Cockenzie Three? What was Kaiser Whilhelm doing cycling through Gullane? What part was played by Lorna, the mysterious widow of Longniddry? And just how did the fate of nations hang on the result of a 2.30 race at Musselburgh one distant summer afternoon. Featuring drama, music, dance, design and video, Mayhem is an ambitious, large scale community theatre project. Participants are drawn from the local community, the performance uses multi-media devices to uncover the mystery behind this race that never was. Renowned for their fast paced visual humour and playful theatrical style, Benchtours provide a fresh new insight into the quirky history of Musselburgh.
