Matthew Miller has lived all his life in Exeter. On the eve of his granddaughter s wedding in the Church of St Mary Steps, recently widowed Matthew announces he cannot attend - he and his beloved wife Lois were married in the same church almost 50 years ago and the memories are too painful. That night, Matthew finds himself caught up in a strange and wonderful journey where he revisits scenes from his past life - dances at the Civic Hall in the 1950 s, the moving of the 'House that Moved , the Exeter Blitz, Deller's Café and a glorious victory at St James Park.
