Les Liaisons Dangereuses archiveIn the glittering salons of 18th century France the Marquise de Merteuil is devising an ingenious plot, for which she will require the help of her lover, the Vicomte de Valmont, a man whose incredible powers of seduction are matched only by his ruthless instinct for intrigue. And so begins an electrifying sequence of longing, betrayal and lies. But what happens if, when out hunting for pure passion, one stumbles upon true love? The mesmerising tale of sexual power games is one of the most highly regarded dramas of the last decade, becoming an Oscar winning movie and a hit around the world.

Even in this lacklustre staging, in which plodding competence is far more in evidence than explosive sexual chemistry, the play still exerts a tremendous grip.

[Christopher Hampton] s fine adaptation of Laclos s epistolary novel has waited a long time for a decent revival. It gets precisely that from [Peter Wilson]. There is always a fascination in seeing evil at work, and an erotically charged plot is hardly calculated to lessen it. [Clive Wood] catches all Valmont s suave assurance and macho complacency. [Siobhan Redmond] gives us not only the Marquise s trademark poise but the restless anger beneath. It s a performance well worth catching.
