Lady Precious Stream is one of the two most successful presentations of the customs of the Chinese theatre on the Western stage. The conventions of the Chinese theatre provide in themselves a fascination for Western audiences, and Mr Hsiung exploits this without spoiling them by coyness or exaggeration. The effect is also dependent on a good story, and here too Mr Hsiung has provided aright, using a fairy-tale pattern with its mystic trinity (of girls), its journeys accomplished and its hazards surmounted to make a happy ending.
