Details
In a rags to riches story worthy of Catherine Cookson herself, illegitimate Kitty is born into a working class Tyneside family. Her life is dogged by poverty and a tempestuous relationship with her resentful, alcoholic mother. As an escape she fantasises that her unknown father was a member of the gentry and that she is meant for better things. An ambitious and strong willed women, she moves to Hastings at the age of 22 and meets friend and confidante, Annie. Torn between loyalty for her mother and her new-found freedom and friendship, Kitty must find the path that leads to security and her destiny as a writer.
