How much does it take to fill the gap that alienates us from our true selves? By what cunning and baffling means will it bring us to our knees? And will we recognise it when it comes, bearing the promise to show us the way out? Set in Maggie's 1980s, and based on a true story, Ism charts the downfall of aspirational lead singer, John Macdonald. After travelling to London from Glasgow and failing to secure a record deal with his band, John meets his ?material girl' and is consumed by the capitalism synonymous with the era. In a bid to numb his growing sense of alienation he begins the torturous journey (not just for him, but his family), into alcoholism facilitated by his surreal ?friend', the Grim Reaper! As the curtain of denial is lifted we come to realise the ?ism' is everywhere, in everyone. And so we ask... .what is ours? And, how did we get here? At times hilariously funny, this tragic play with original music from the era addresses a topic that continues to be 'brushed under the carpet'. It is time to face the 'elephant in the room'!
