1840's London is replaced by 21st Century Cardiff as Ebenezer 'Ebs' Scrooge struggles to come to terms with his past, present and dreaded future. With the help of three job-weary ghosts Ebs must face the wrongs he has done to his wife, his best friend, his community and ultimately himself. Waging his own war between destruction and redemption is the previously overlooked Jacob 'Jake' Marley, Ebs' 'dead as a doornail' partner. A darkly comic interpretation of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol, merging modern dance with theatre, Humbug aims to tackle similar issues to Dickens but seeks to look beyond the Christian ethic of the original to a more social analysis of a person's place in modern society: domestic violence, the claustrophobia of modern marriage, the obsession with attaining wealth and the many shades of grey within us all.
