Guernica archiveGuernica is based on the true story of a tragedy that happened in 1997 when a ship traveling from Albania to Italy carrying Albanian refugees sunk in the coastal waters of Italy. The setting of the play is in a sunken ship at the bottom of the sea. In this portrait of the aftermath of a tragic event, the three unquiet souls, unable to rest, feeling that they have unfinished business with the World, lie awake amongst all those who drowned when the ship sank. This is a visual portrait of memories, dreams and the unanswered questions of those who die at the hands of others. Dreamlike and surreal, the stories and fate of those who never get to tell their stories come to life at the bottom of the sea. The play is about loss, victims, the plight of asylum seekers, and the destruction of humanity, as seen through the eyes of those who are silenced in such tragedies. It deals with the tragedy with a sharp sense of humour and irony, but is at the same time sensitive and humane. This story will be conveyed through images, movement and music in a way that will be symbolic of all such human tragedies.
