Fred and Madge are an ordinary 50s suburban couple. They lead dull, boring lives; they hold down empty, meaningless jobs. Their marriage is slowly breaking up. The future looks bleak. But Fred and Madge are also an extraordinary couple. Fred is employed by the State to push a boulder up a hill. Madge sieves water. They take alpenstocks on holiday to Norfolk. They hate modern architecture. They convalesce to the sound of a Palm Court orchestra on the NHS. Madge dreams of working in an Indian harem. The power of comedy rescues a cast from the routine of their stage-bound lives. Soon London is demolished by the laughter of professional insulters, and the exotic East overruns drab England...
