French writer Jean-Claude Grumberg's 1973 work in which the art of theatre is examined within a play is given a new translation. A small village in Poland, 1930, rehearsals are in full swing for a play about 'The Dreyfus Affair', and all is not well; the leading man can't find his inspiration, the costumes are a disaster, actors don't show up for rehearsals -O yoi yoi! And not even a snatch of a song! The anti-semitism of the Dreyfus trial in the France of 1890s, and rise of Fascism in 1930s Poland are explored with intelligence and with in Jack Rosenthal's translation of Jean-Claude Grumberg's French comic masterpiece. Events in present day central Europe make this a poignant and timely revival.
