It's 1966 and the Cold War is, well, near freezing. The Hammer and Sickle flies over much of Eastern Europe. In the eyes of the Communist, all Westerners are spies, especially Walter Hollander, a caterer from New Jersey. Whilst on holiday in the outer reaches of Europe, Walter and his family are forced to take refuge in the American Embassy, being accused of subterfuge after taking photographs of a building surrounded by barbed wire and guard dogs. Unfortunately for them they find themselves in the care of the diplomatically inept Axel Magee, son of the Ambassador and an eccentric priest who entertains notions of joining the Magic Circle. What follows is chaos. On both sides of the Embassy door!
Don't Drink the Water is Woody Allen at his vintage best, a comedy of countless errors, bad manners and cultural (in)differences with a splash of silliness thrown in for good measure.
