Commanding Voices archiveDid you turn the gas off? Did you lock the front door? Have you got your keys? Are you sure? Go back and check. Are you really sure? Go and check again. Now check again. OK. Now you're sure. Or are you? These may be vaguely familiar feelings to many people, but to sufferers of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) they become ritualised obsessions which keep them imprisoned in their homes. Commanding Voices explores the horrendous consequences of parental oppression as we see an authoritarian father attempting to mould his son in his own academic image. Ben, a promising artist, has been offered a place to study at The Slade. However, his father has other ideas about Ben's future. His wife, Helen, has already sacrificed her promising career as a concert pianist to become the dutiful wife but can she stand by and watch as Edward attempts to suppress Ben's creativity. These pressures trigger Ben's OCD and set him on a roller-coaster journey through an alarming illness set against the backdrop of an ambitious father's political career.
