1926: when vast oil reserves are discovered in one of the new Balkan states - the notoriously unstable Republic of Herzoslovakia - the race is on to win the oil concession. Pinning its hopes on the restoration of the monarchy, His Majesty s Government arranges a secret meeting with the heir to the throne at its favourite diplomatic rendezvous, the great country house known as Chimneys. Anthony Cade is visiting London to deliver the memoirs of a certain Count Stylptich to a publisher, when he too is summoned to Chimneys. Little does he know that his errand has placed him at the heart of an international conspiracy - for it seems that somebody will stop at nothing to prevent the monarchy being restored in faraway Herzoslovakia.
