In a Gorbals tenement and in the brief, blissful breaks from the daily slog in a clothing factory, Miriam and Alec, Morris and Sharon live out their lives against the backdrop on 20th century history. Youthful idealists kicking against their Jewish heritage as Hitler rises to power in Germany, their lives and attitudes change over time, sometimes pragmatically and sometimes with regret, as they attempt to carve out their own little slices of happiness in a vast and intimidating world.
Bread and Butter examines life at the bottom of the social ladder, where luxury is feeding pigeons in the park and the simple staples of life are as cherished as caviar. Dreams crumble over time and characters are measured over decades according to how they respond to the huge, continent-wide changes taking place around them.
