John Murray's
An Treas Fad (The Third Rank) is set against an idyllic pastoral summer on the island of Lewis cira 1814-1815. Gently and playfully the play exposes the sibling love and tenderness shared by two brothers whose world is about to be shattered as the military recruiting squads march across the Highlands claiming young men for the Napoleonic war-fields in Europe. In sharp contrast, Iain Finlay MacLeod highlights the current media pre-occupation with castaway islands, and in a macabre but hilariously funny way, he examines the survival instincts of a group marooned on a desert island. These plays are performed in Gaelic with no English translation.
