Comedy challenging patronage and the nation's obsession with celebrity. An Elegant Madness pits an established English legend, namely Beau Brummell, against his raffish entrepreneurial manservant Austin. Challenging patronage, the English relationship with all things foreign, and above all, the nation's obsession with celebrity and all its trappings, Hutchinson's style skillfully creates a language that resonates with the grandeur of the Georgian setting of this play. An Elegant Madness is fast moving and full of comedy and moments of pathos, seamlessly contrasting philosophy with humour and laughter with madness.
