Details
In the summer of 1920, two survivors of the First World War meet in the quiet Yorkshire countryside. One, Tom Birkin, has come to restore a mural in a church; the other, Charles Moon, to find an unmarked medieval grave. Both men hope to forget their wartime horrors by uncovering a more distant past. While Moon remains outside both church and community, Birkin is accepted warmly by local Wesleyans. And though shunned by the church in which he works, Birkin falls in love with Alice Keach, the vicar's wife; an encounter which he will never forget.
