Sir Joseph Porter KCB has risen effortlessly to the rank of First Lord of the Admiralty without ever going to sea. Sullivan's score perfectly captures the mood of the piece. The curtain-raiser is Trial By Jury, in which two people who are unable to settle their differences find themselves in court, and the full majesty of the law is brought to bear upon their case.
