The Valkyrie introduces Siegmund, Wotan's son by a human, and the Valkyries - Wotan's female warriors who are memorably portrayed in one of the opera's most exciting scenes. 'The Ride of the Valkyries'. Siemund's unwittingly incestuous love for his sister Sieglinde ignites a power struggle between Wotan and his consort Fricka, which leads to Siegmund's death. Brunnhilde, Wotan's best-loved daughter, defies her father and rescues Sieglinde, pregnant with Siegmund's child. Enraged by her defiance, Wotan imprisons Brunnhilde inside a ring of fire, stripped of the protection of the gods. Only a moral, innocent hero can save her. Sung in English with surtitles.
