Details
Strauss's dazzling operetta is a romantic period piece set among Hungarian gypsies. Exiled with his father in childhood, Sandor Barinkay returns to reclaim the family estates including a ruined castle with a hidden treasure. He is greeted by the gypsy tribe, his father's allies, and the current occupant Kalman Zsupan, village mayor and pig-farmer. Learning of the treasure Zsupan plans for Barinkay to marry his daughter Arletta but Barinkay falls in love with Saffi a gypsy princess. They are on the brink of marriage when a troop of soldiers appear and all the men are recruited to fight against the invading Turks. Barinkay and his 'Romany Hussars' return victoriously and he and Saffi are reunited.
