The Daily Telegraph (11Jan01): This Parsifal is a wonderful achievement, received by the audience with a rapturous ovation.
The Times (11Jan01): One of the best productions of Wagner s last, endlessly tricky opera that I have seen. [Richard Armstrong] s conducting was lyrical, easily flowing, perfectly shaped over the near five-hour span. The playing was very good indeed. The male chorus sang heroically. The Flower Maidens were just as impressive. The whole performance made you listen to the music afresh and then think about it. [Silviu Purcarete] s intensely thoughtful production had the same effect. Amfortas s guilt and agony were more than ever central and [Matthew Best] portrayed both with uncomfortable directness. [John Murray] s brilliantly acted Parsifal was a kid from the football terraces. The singing was good, with one outstanding vocal performance, [Anne Marie-Owens] s refreshingly unfreaky Kundry. The worst result of underfunding is that the company s English touring has been cut: this wonderful staging will not be seen anywhere other than Glasgow and Edinburgh, which is a shocking waste of public investment.
