Count Ory is a chancer, bent on seducing the Countess Adele while the menfolk are away fighting the Crusades. The women's decision to spurn all other men until they return only increases Ory's determination to overcome the obstacles in his way. There are disguises and confusions, thunderstorms and drunken debauches, romantic entanglements and mistaken identities under cover of darkness. Rossini's final comedy is a farcical romp, replete with delectable music, ranging from skittish coloratura fireworks to melting intensity and poignant lyricism, along with vocal and instrumental dazzlement, slapstick and bravura energy. Sung in French, English surtitles.
