Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona is one of the most famous of all 18th-century intermezzos, comic operas by another name. There's a big hint in the title - 'The Maid as Mistress' - which suggests the domestic goings on to follow. Uberto is angry that his young ward Serpina is behaving insolently towards him. If he has a wife, that should help calm the stormy waters at home. But Serpina has her own ideas on what Uberto should do, and enlists the help of Vespone and a disguise to bring them about. Sung in English. Approx. running time 45 minutes.
