Shostakovich's revision of his most famous opera
Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Based on the novel by Leskov, Shostakovich depicts Katerina's soul-destroying loneliness and violent sexual passion in music of soaring lyricism.
Katerina makes fascinating comparison with
Lady Macbeth, (the version more frequently performed in the west), not only for the alterations made to satisfy Soviet authority, but also the reworking of the score in the 1950s by a mature Shostakovich who, to the end of his life, claimed this to be his definitive version of the opera.
