Based on the journal of Manfred Lewin and interviews with his lover Gad Beck and other survivors, Jake Heggie's thought provoking masterpiece, For a look or a touch, premiered in 2007, is an emotional tale of two gay lovers, both prisoners in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer capture the voice of all homosexual victims of the holocaust, their heart-warming recollections of young love and distressing descriptions of terror. One man dies, the other survives, neither will ever forget. The evening concludes with An American Songbook, a semi-staged selection of William Bolcolms dark, witty and suggestive Cabaret Songs, and Richard Rodney Bennett's kaleidescope of nursery rhyme settings ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, Songs before Sleep, both performed by bass-baritone Jonathan Lemalu and pianist Michael Hampton.
