Rich widower Scandrell doesn't want his daughter Lucinda to marry (maybe for Freudian reasons, but more likely because he's too mean to fork out a dowry). Feather-brained Lucinda can't outwit him, but crafty servant Lisette handles it. She gets Lucinda to feign illness, and her suitor Clarence to pretend to be the doctor who cures her.
