Details
Orson Welles's only attempt to write, direct and star in a lavish Broadway musical. Labelled 'Wellesapoppin' by one critic, Around The World has a sprightly score by Cole Porter. None of this work has been heard since 1946. Mr Phileas Fogg, a bachelor of means and exact habits, bets London's Whist Club that he can travel around the world in eighty days. Accompanied by Pat Passepartout, his Yankee valet, and Missus Aouda, an Indian maiden - and pursued by Detective Inspector Fix of Scotland Yard and Pat's Irish girlfriend Molly - Fogg journeys to Paris, Madrid, Brindisi, Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Hong Kong, California, the Rocky Mountains, and New York before returning to London and winning the wager. European premiere. Semi Staged Performance. This musical has not been seen since its 1946 run. The musical ran for 75 performances at the Adelphi Theatre New York from 31 May to August 3 1946 incurring huge financial losses.
