The Unknown is part of Dance Umbrella’s Brief Encounters series in which short works by talented new choreographers or established artists are performed prior to main stage shows. This piece is performed in the Pit prior to the Merce Cunningham Dance Company programme in the Barbican Theatre. The Unknown is a lyrical and powerful evocation of intimacy and (mis)communication between an old man and a young woman with different world views and is performed by choreographer and dancer Cécile Feza Bushidi to a soundscape that includes music originally composed by Thomas Jeker. Cécile Feza Bushidi was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and raised in France. She was awarded a scholarship to train at The Ailey School in New York. She later joined Charleroi/Danses Plan K under the direction of Frédéric Flamand and came to the UK to work with Random Dance/Wayne McGregor. Her first choreographic work, X:Out of place, was presented in January 2007 at The Place.
