Bonnie Bird New Choreographer 2002 award winner. Newly (2007) is a duet inspired by composer Veljo Tormis' large-scale choral composition Estonian Wedding Songs. Two dancers respond with movement, wit and vocal material to the principles underlying the traditional folk music. By reinterpreting the structure of the music, they create their own framework for dance and discover a space in which their relationship can expose itself in unexpected ways. The Accompanists (2007) is a collaboration with composer Matteo Fargion in which the practice of accompaniment is explored. Dancers and composer share a selection of materials including movements, sounds, sung text and spoken word that are drawn together into rhythmical patterns. As the piece develops, the structures in which these simple materials meet the interweave becomes increasingly complex. The work evolves into a performance of subtle and uplifting virtuosity; a compelling insight into the dynamics of how we play. Catch (2005) - Two dancers travel through a series of self-portraits using movement to fragment, reform and replicate their images. Investigating complex symmetries and intricate rhythmic patterns, the individual personalities of the dancers are defined whilst strongly connected - they shift tone and pace without losing their bond. Against a mesmerising soundtrack by composer John-Marc Gowans, their journey is charged with the fragility of human relationships, and the viewer is drawn into their subtle exchanges of being.
