The Royal Ballet of Flanders has for more than 30 years been the flagship of classical ballet in Flanders, and now enjoys the distinction of being the only classical dance company in Belgium. Inspired by the talents of this young and dynamic company, Prokovsky presents a fast-moving version of Shakespeare’s classic story of Verona’s star-crossed lovers, reducing it to two acts and focusing specifically on Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio and Tybalt. The dancers are light, fleet of foot and stylish. With Prokofiev’s exquisite score performed by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia and Alexandre Vassilev’s Rennaissance costumes, this is a romantic yet poignant variation on an old favourite.
