Richard Alston Dance Company - The Devil in the Detail/About-Face/Red Run archiveContemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. The Devil in the Detail - Alston's brand new work, is a light-hearted, light-footed celebration of sheer elegance and wit. Scott Joplin, 'the King of Ragtime', wrote piano rags of huge appeal, rich in syncopated detail - it's music to make the dancers strut and stride in high style, yet remain cool and nonchalant. About-Face - is company dancer Martin Lawrance's firs commission for the Richard Alston Dance Company. It captures the simplicity yet also the intricacy of Marin Marais' Suite dans un Gout Etranger, sublime seventeenth century music for viols. Red Run - embraces the spirit of its atmospheric score Red Rum nine songs for eleven instruments by the German composer Heiner Goebbels. The eleven instruments include electric guitar which gives a tinge of rock influence, and piano and brass which burst into passages of all-out-jazz - but these episodes shift gear sharply into darker; more shadowy spaces.
