Contemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. The guttural and fervent cries of Balkan singers form the basis of Richard Alston’s Gypsy Mixture. Remixed by a fantastic range of DJs from all over the world, gypsy influences are given a sharp twist, a grittier edge. Gypsy Mixture is about humanity fighting to keep its spirit against harsh and uncertain surroundings. In Fingerprint, Alston uses two pieces of keyboard music by J.S. Bach - Capriccio and Toccata In D Major - the first tinged with sadness, the second full of grand flourishes and galloping dance rhythm, to paint a picture of Bach’s brother Jakob’s departure for Sweden (from where he never returned). In Brink, fast-rising choreographer Martin Lawrance is inspired by Japanese composer Ayuo’s quirky Eurasian Tango.
