Richard Alston Dance Company - A Ceremony of Carols archiveContemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. Receiving its world premiere in Canterbury, Richard Alston's A Ceremony of Carols is choreographed to Benjamin Britten's masterpiece for boys' voices and harp. The music will be sung live by Canterbury Cathedral's choir, conducted by David Flood, with harpist Camilla Pay. The dance is a celebration of a sheer surge of breath, a pure stream of sound. The music is of magisterial simplicity, conjuring up a rich world of rapt and devout adoration. The power and the mystery of the old Christmas story are all-pervading in rituals of tender interchange and euphoric rushes of speed.
